January 2005
Pet Identification

As of this month we have begun Micro chipping each kitten for each new pet owner. Using the AVID micro chipping standard our pet owners get the added bonus of knowing that if there kitten or grown cat becomes lost, no human shelter or SPCA facility will euthanize or place their cat with anyone by mistake.

The way it works is a small chip the shape and size of a long piece of rice is injected between the shoulder blades just below the skin. A specific and unique number on that chip is read by a hand held scanner. Vet practices and human shelters all carry these scanners or readers which allows them to cross reference the number on the chip with a single International database of information for tracking purposes. The number is associated with the owner and the owners contact information.

Why did we begin to do kitten micro chipping?
It is something I always wanted to do for pet owners as an added benefit of doing business with Defiant. Many people, who know me, know I'm not a fan of vet practices. I found that most all vets prey on our love for our pets and charge unrealistically for simple services. By having us chip your cat, it bypasses having a Vet take you to the cleaners for vet visits and higher cost in micro chipping.

We decided on using the AVID pet tracking system due to the popularity and easy of use. What it means to you is a greater chance of finding a lost or stolen cat. You may have some questions on pet identification, you can try these FAQ's on the AVID website.

I should also share that due to the nature of how micro chipping security is set up, you will need to re-register the kitten to your name after receiving a kitten. The short answer is that once I buy the microchips those chips are automatically assigned ownership to me. If you don't re-register your kitten as the new owner, then I get call from wherever in the U.S. the kitten or cat is found and considered the owner. While this may help in the end it is not the best way of getting your kitten back to you. For this reason you will need to pay a small fee to AVID to change the ownership I.D.
